Pondalowie Vineyards Dominic and Krystina Morris are a young winemaking couple with a passion for making interesting, and focused premium red wines. They met while working vintage in the Barossa Valley at St Hallett. From those beginnings they set off together and spent many years travelling and working consecutive vintages in Australia and Europe. It was on their regular end of vintage holiday to the beautiful Pondalowie Bay on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula in January 1997 that the pair made the decision to funnel their enthusiasm and experience into a vineyard and winery of their own.

They chose the Bendigo region in Central Victoria and with family support set about establishing 25 acres of vineyard with grapes varieties that they were passionate about. The family vineyards are located in Bridgewater On Loddon and Bendigo. And Dominic sources fruit from premium vineyards in Heathcote as well.

13 consecutive vintages in Portugal’s Douro Valley gave Dominic and Krystina a taste for Tempranillo and they planted some next to Dominic’s fathers Shiraz Vineyard in Bridgewater. Tempranillo is the edge in the Vineyard blend that sets off the Cabernet and Shiraz components. And the MT Tempranillo demonstrates a knowledge of the variety from the Iberian Peninsula and translating it into Australian.

As well as Tempranillo, they also have Shiraz, Cabernet, Malbec, Merlot & Viognier planted, and the winery is now based in Bendigo in a fully equipped site on an industrial estate.

The name Pondalowie was after the place where they decided to turn their dream into reality. And incidentally, the art work on the label is the winery kelpie.
